Call for Applications: ICC-ITC-WTO MSME Group Small Business Champions Competition 2026

African micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), industry associations and business support organisations can now submit proposals to the 2026 Small Business Champions Competition. This initiative invites practical, creative ways of using artificial intelligence to help small businesses participate more effectively in international trade. It is a chance to bring solutions that address real barriers and amplify global trade impact for smaller enterprises.

Eligibility

• Projects from small businesses, enterprises, industry associations, chambers of commerce or non-governmental organisations that support MSMEs are eligible.

• Proposals must focus on the use of artificial intelligence to support MSME international trade, such as tools that improve supply chain efficiency, reduce costs or expand market participation.

• Submissions should include a clear implementation plan describing how your solution addresses specific challenges faced by small businesses in global trade.

Duration

Applications for the 2026 competition are open in early 2026, with work done by the selection committee and final activities scheduled around mid-year.

Deadline

The deadline to submit your proposal is March 16, 2026. Late entries may not be accepted.

 Guidance for Applicants

• Review existing AI tools and trade facilitation challenges faced by MSMEs before drafting your proposal. Practical examples include AI systems for demand forecasting, customs documentation automation, or market intelligence for export opportunities. Thinking through specific pain points will strengthen your concept.

• Align your solution with measurable outcomes such as reduced transaction time, cost reductions for exporters, or increased export volumes. Quantifiable goals help reviewers assess impact.

• Support your application with evidence of pilot testing or early usage if available. Early results or testimonials demonstrate feasibility.

• Consider partnerships with tech providers, trade organisations, or academic institutions to broaden expertise and resource access for your project.

Applications are now open for the 2024 World Trade Organization (WTO) Young Trade Leaders Programme Worldwide .

Application Deadline: 5 July 2024 (23.59 CET).

The WTO Young Trade Leaders Programme aims to foster a better understanding of the WTO’s work and international trade among young people by creating a network of “Young Trade Leaders” around the world. People between the ages of 18 and 30 who have a strong interest in international trade are encouraged to apply.

Young Trade Leaders will be exceptional young people who have a clear understanding of how trade can be of benefit to people and planet. They will bring new perspectives and ideas about the role of trade and the WTO while also having the opportunity to learn about the organization’s work and play a role in advancing its mission.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be:

between the ages of 18 and 30 on the closing date for applications with a strong interest in international trade

a citizen of a WTO member

neither currently affiliated with the WTO, nor have a relative who is currently WTO-affiliated

able to demonstrate a good level of written and spoken English – knowledge of a second WTO working language (French or Spanish) is an asset

attuned to the need for diplomacy, show a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, willing to foster understanding of trade issues and promote constructive dialogue

committed to participate fully throughout the one-year programme (July 2024-June 2025).

Selection process

The WTO Secretariat will review all applications. Short-listed applicants will be invited to take part in an interview in July 2024.

Selected leaders will not receive remuneration but they will be invited to travel to Geneva to participate in the 2024 WTO Public Forum in September.

2-3 minute video in which they briefly introduce themselves, express their interest in the programme and explain the impact they hope to have as a Young Trade Leader

a written contribution (max. 300 words) answering the following question: What does trade mean for you?
